During the recent AWS re:Invent 2018, Amazon Web Services came up with a number of pronouncements related to numerous new services available to different needs and solutions. Each of the products are meant to solve particular challenges in the marketplace. Here are some of the top releases that we think are more relevant and that we are sure will be trending topic this 2019!
Amazon EC2 C5n Instances
Amazon Web Services announced the new EC2 C5n instances that have the capability of utilizing up to 100 Gbps of bandwidth. The instances provide higher network performance on any bandwidth size from the 25 Gbps bandwidth up to 100 Gbps of bandwidth. The new instances also boast of a 33% more memory footprint compared to their C5 alternatives. C5n instances help improve the performance of the applications that work well with high packet rate performance and improved network.
3.0 GHz Intel Xeon processors run the new EC2 C5n instances. (Skylake Scalable processors). They also provide support for the Intel Advanced Vector Extensions 512 instruction set. (The AVX-512) C5n makes networking using 100 Gps available to all workloads within the network without requiring users to use custom drivers and third-party tools. In addition, the workloads on C5n continue to enjoy high security, reliability and availability features of the Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.
Users can use the C5n instances to accelerate data transfer either from or to their Amazon S3. This speeds up results delivery and cuts down data ingestion time for applications on the network.

Amazon EC2 A1 Instances
It is also important to highlight those new types of instances that are based on ARM architecture. They are supported for Amazon Linux and Red Hat Linux Enterprise and they are more economic than the ones that are based on x86.
This new product has been designed to help companies predict accurate forecasts, using machine learning. This is particularly relevant as it can represent a competitive advantage to any company, being able to act ahead, for example, on new customer demand trends influencing on resource, financial and product planning. We consider this product especially relevant to enterprises as it has a direct integration with SAP and it can have an influence and interconnection when unifying forecasts that can have critical impact on prices and workflows. Definitely another clear example of how important the translation of data into a meaning through machine learning can change and improve the performance of any business.
AWS Transit Getaway
This new service will enable customers to connect their Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPCs) and their on-premises networks to a single gateway. This fact will be especially useful to accounts that are growing and need to connect and sale different networks across multiple accounts. Something that can become time consuming and costly can now be drastically reduced by creating and managing a single connection from the central getaway into each Amazon VPC. This is also possible from an on-premise but also on remote. In summary, what AWS Transit Getaway allows is to make connectivity easier so you can really scale your network as you grow. Last but not least, it is important to highlight that AWS Transit Getaway is a solution that will enable transitive routing between VPCs.
AWS S3 Intelligent-Tiering
AWS also announced the availability of this service. This is a new storage option for customers looking to automatically optimize storage costs even when data access patterns look different. It comes with no impact on the operational overhead and performance, making it ideal for building the blockchain.
Intelligent-Tiering (S3 INT) is one of a kind cloud object storage class that enables organizations to get cost savings automatically when it moves data between two data access tiers; the infrequent access and frequent access every time there is a change of data patterns. This service works well for data with changing access patterns.
Amongst the two access tiers, the infrequent access tier is the lower-cost type. The intelligent tiering monitors the object access patterns and moves objects that have not been accessed on the high-cost frequent access tier for the last 30 days to the infrequent access tier. If the object is later accessed frequently, it is then moved back to the frequent access tier. Apart from a small monthly cost for monitoring and intelligent moving, there are no retrieval fees in this package.
Finally, in order to facilitate its operation, a new API called Batch Operations will also be available where SFTP services can be created and linked to S3 buckets.
AWS Security Hub
AWS Security Hub was another service whose availability was announced at AWS re:Invent 2018. The security hub gives organizations a comprehensive view of their security status on the AWS environment. This is important for them to know their compliance status across various AWS accounts.
The AWS Security Hub delivers powerful security tools to the users from endpoint protection to firewalls and vulnerability and compliance scanners. However, unlike other systems where the IT staff has to move back and forth between all the available tools to respond to hundreds of security alerts, the Security Hub aggregates these security alerts. It then organizes and prioritizes them in the order of their importance.
The service is able to get security alerts from various AWS services such as Amazon Inspector, Amazon Macie, Amazon GuardDuty and other partner solutions. These alerts are then summarized on integrated dashboards that come with graphs and tables for ease of interpretation and action. Moreover, you can also use the automated compliance checks to monitor your environment continuously. These compliance checks are based on the AWS best practices and any standards that individual organizations may set up.
The AWS Security Hub is also relevant because it integrates events from the AWS Config service.
Amazon Textract is a service for individuals and organizations that generate lots of documents and notes in the course of doing business such as lawyers, financial service providers, insurance services and doctors, among other professions. The service automatically extracts data and text from any scanned documents. This service is more than just another optical character recognition tool since it can identify the content of information written in tables and the forms.
The new service solves the problem of the slow, ineffective and time-consuming extraction of data through manual data entry and the fact that most OCR tools are hard to customize. When there is a change of the presentation and workflow of data in documents, these rules then need to be updated by hard-cording them into the OCR software. This is not only time-consuming but also very cumbersome.
Amazon Textract deals with these challenge by incorporating machine learning into the OCR software. Therefore, it can read virtually any type of document accurately without the need for customization. Any organization can use the service to automate their document outflows. This allows them to process millions of documents in a matter of a few hours which effectively improves service delivery.
Amazon FSx for Windows File Server
This service will provide fully managed native Microsoft Windows file system to easily move Window-based applications that require file storage to Amazon Web Services. This functionality provides shared file storage with the compatibility and features that a Windows-based applications rely on, including full support for the SMB protocol and Windows NTFS, Active Directory (AD) integration, and Distributed File System (DFS). This compatibility and performance is particularly important when moving workloads that require Windows shared file storage, like CRM, ERP, and.NET applications, as well as home directories. An important fact to add on this new AWS service is that the price will approximately be 50% cheaper than EFS.
AWS Control Tower
Finally we have selected the AWS Control Tower as part of the list of new releases for this AWS reinvent 2018 as it will enable the automation on baseline environment set-ups or landing zones in a a secure, well-architected multi-account AWS environment. This means that distributed teams are able to provision new AWS accounts quickly, while central teams have the peace of mind knowing that new accounts are aligned with centrally established, company-wide compliance policies. This gives control over the environment, without sacrificing the speed and agility that AWS provides to the development teams.
Many other services and products were announced and highlighted during this yearly event that gathers all annual releases and achievements from Amazon Web Services. It also confirms that AWS will keep leading the cloud computing industry for the years to come and that customers and partners will continue to benefit from the agility, cost-saving, security and innovation that this giant public cloud is yet to offer.
