How Serunion improved response times of their Web Services platform migrating to AWS

The food services company overcame availability issues and slow response times with their existing web services platform and Oracle database by enlisting the help of Linke and migrating to AWS.

Serunion is a food service company that operates in the Spanish and Portuguese market. For the past 30 years, they’ve provided food production and delivery services to businesses in healthcare, education, leisure and travel industries.

The company also owns and operates restaurants and cafes at airport concession stands. Their proprietary logistics methods allow them to perform their activities on site. This includes setting and cooking, producing menus and distributing them to their clients.

The Challenge

The company forecasted an increase in the number of customers for the new school year. The volume of users was estimated to grow between 20 to 30 percent. This meant that their existing infrastructure and current resources on-premise were not powerful enough to provide an optimal level of service. The increase in traffic would jeopardize their platforms performance (they were using an Oracle database and their own suite of applications called “Serunet”).

Additionally, they needed to solve this problem on a tight deadline before the new school semester began in September. So they needed to complete migration as quickly as possible to avoid down-times and without affecting the daily routines of their users.

The Solution

Serunion, supported by Linke, migrated their SAP BI and SAP Business Object database to Amazon Web Services to overcome their capacity problems. Once the migration was successful, they also proposed to move their web applications (Serunet) to the AWS cloud.

They proposed using the following services:
  • Amazon EC2
  • Amazon Route 53
  • Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)
  • Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

By moving their Oracle database to the cloud using AWS Migration service they improved the database’s performance in the cloud. Also, 12 web applications were migrated to the cloud which helped secure the availability of their service during peak times.

The Results

The AWS migration helped improve the response time and scalability of their web services. Their IT Systems manager, Ricardo Carrillo, said “There has been 40% performance improvement on reporting tasks in Serunet. If a process was taking 2 minutes on-premise, now it only takes 1.1 seconds.”

This has vastly increased their ability to execute processes on Serunet and improved their user experience. More importantly, they were able to complete the migration within their strict timeline with Linke’s help.
